Cliff dropped Warren off at his place, Warren promising to stay in touch. Deep down, he knew he couldn't put off the search for Reid, but he had to clear his mind of other things first. Chiefly, he'd make sure Ali was on the path to heading home safe.
Warren and Adam lived in a cozy brick house just off the main drag of Snow Creek, if the town's main street even deserved that title. Outside of ski season it wasn't a place where much happened, hence its "downtown" consisted of about four square blocks.
Adam's car wasn't in the driveway, which wasn't surprising.
Breezing inside, Warren itemized his to-do list, which fortunately didn't consist of all that much: shower, change, call the auto shop, and raid the gun cabinet. Not necessarily in that order.
In fact, he thought, may as well call the shop first. Get the tow truck on its way quicker.
He grabbed the phone in the kitchen, then dialed the number from memory. The phone rang twice before his little brother picked up.
"Snow Creek Auto, this is Adam."
"Five-A Muir Street, this is your brother."
A groan came down the line.
"Well, at least you aren't dead. Wondered when you didn't come home last night."
Warren carried the phone into his bedroom and began stripping down, preparing for his shower.
"Since when did you turn into Dad?"
That was met with silence.
"Hey, I'm actually calling for work related reasons." Warren threw his mud-cuffed jeans into the corner to deal with later. "There's a Camry off the road on the three-nine-five. Owner's got a cabin up that way, but she's only in town for the weekend."
His brother sounded marginally more interested.
"Bet she'll want it fixed up quick. I'll tell Tom. I'm sure he can bring the truck around."
"Great."
"Any idea what's wrong with it?"
"Uh..." Warren couldn't bear telling that particular chestnut to his little brother. And especially not over the phone. "Animal impact," he concluded. "Broken headlight, hood was a bit rumpled, not sure what else."
"Cool."
Only you would call a wrecked car 'cool,' Warren thought, halfway between amusement and brotherly fondness.
"Thanks, man. Appreciate it."
"It's kinda my job."
"See you sometime tonight," Warren said. Adam bid him goodbye and he hung up, heading straight for the shower.
